Sleeve Notes
Who would ever believe that a glassblower, a draper's assistant, a caretaker, an electrician and a liftboy would ever turn out to be the greatest folk act to come out of Ireland in fifty years! THE DUBLINERS are probably the best accident that ever happened to the music world, and contribute to it not only with their superb voices, but also their extraordinary talent as musicians.
THE DUBLINERS, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barny McKenna, Ciaron Bourke, John Sheahan, are rough looking with long beards and careless hair. They wear shirts open at the neck with sleeves rolled up, which gives them the appearance of hard-working labourers. Their Irish brogue is harsh as well as pleasing, their manner loose but professional, and their personalities are outwardly warm and inviting. Everyone belongs to their songs and music — the worker, the man on the dole, the winners, the losers, the liars, fighters and all of the living.
Notes
I don't suppose there is anything that makes a collector happier than stumbling upon a very rare item. And that is exactly what happened with this album, I stumbled on it. While compiling this Dubliners site update I became aware of a handful tracks of which I had little or no prior knowledge.
- The tracks in question:
- "Rathcliffe Highway" (Ronnie Drew Vocals)
- "Wheels Of The World" (Instrumental)
- "Salford Town" (Luke Kelly Vocals)
- "Bold Princess Royal" (Luke Kelly Vocals) — 1969 & 70 single release
- "Raglan Road" (Luke Kelly Vocals) — 1970 single release
- "Beggar Man" (Ronnie Drew Vocals) — 1971 single release
1 The first 3 tracks began appearing on compilations in 1998 on Ireland's No. 1 Folk Group. These tracks have also appeared on a handful of other compilations since. When I had originally found out about these 3 tracks, I had no idea where they came from or when they were recorded.
"Beggar Man" with vocals by Ronnie Drew, originally released as a single in 1971, is included on 2003's The Best of the Original Dubliners CD compilation.
I normally don't pay too much attention to compilations for they are usually a rehash of the same old tracks, and therefore I hadn't had prior knowledge of these releases.
To my knowledge, "Bold Princess Royal" and (Luke's original version of) "Raglan Road" were only released as a singles and did not appear on any other Dubliners release.
This (Luke's original) version of "Raglan Road" is the greatest find for me, for up to this point, I had never even heard the track.
According to Wikipedia: "Some rare pressings feature the tracks 'Bold Princess Royal' and 'The Beggarman'." At that point I started looking … and found this rare pressing. While this Canadian LP (unfortunately) does not include 'Bold Princess Royal' and 'The Beggarman'; if not for this information (on Wikipedia) I would have never even been looking, and not found this album. I don't know if the Wikipedia entry is wrong (about which are extra tracks) and this (Canadian) release is the "rare pressing", or if there is indeed another to be found.
